CD Review

There are so many people out there that come up to me and say.. "Have you heard this" or "nothing compares to this" and in some cases I agree.  But my job is not only to seek out and find great, new, up and coming talent but to also remind all of you where the music you all are listening to came from.  I wrote a review a bit ago about a tribute CD I got from CD Smash and Fastlane Records.  It was a CD that was a tribute to Enuff Z Nuff.  What I failed to mention was the other CD that was included in my package.  It is entitled "Jetboys of Babylon" and it is a 17 track CD that is a tribute to the New York Dolls and what they have done over time that has made them a legend and glam rock what it is today.    I am sure you all know most of the tracks on here but what you probably don't know is the overflowing talent featured here.  I am going to fix THAT.

The first track on the CD and for good reason is "Babylon" covered by Frankenstein 3000 with special Guest David Johansen.  What a treat this is.  Flat out funky and just like it should be done.  You gotta love hearing David shout it out like the old days.  And a perfect choice for this band to cover this song.  They are strong and in your face.  Tight and very well mastered.  www.frankenstein3000.com

"Personality Crisis" is performed by Flipp featuring Steve Jones of Sex Pistols legend.  I love hearing bands I don't know and Flipp is one of these bands.  I know and love Steve Jones and he fits with these guys like my new boots fit my tiny foot.  And having them on makes me wanna jump and shout just like this song does.  You all need to check out Flipp at www.flippcentral.com.  But you also gotta check out this song with Steve screamin right along with em.

Geoff Starr Rock N' Roll Band takes on "Looking For a Kiss". Bring me more BASS NOW!  I fuckin dig this song. Geoff's band kicks major ass. They ARE Rock N Roll.   This band not only shakes the song up but does it major justice.  You can find out more about The Geoff Starr Rock N Roll band at www.geoffstarr.com

"Vietnamese Baby"  performed by Slow Motorcade is sensational  to say the least.  Hailing from Los Angeles this band is a dedication to Hot Rods, Loud Music, fetish and funk.  They make this tune twirl your head and shake your ass.  You can feel influences from the New York Dolls themselves to English Power Punk.  Slow Motorcade is a progression into the now with the past dressing them up.  Check the out at www.slowmotorcade.com

The Taste  takes on "It's Too Late"  Its best wrapped up in their bio that states "Its like a bloody fist fight between the Datsuns and Guns & Roses". This band has the sound a lot try for and never master. Quirky vocals and screaming guitars makes this song one of the repeats on your player.  A great choice for this tune.  Catch them online at  www.thetasteonline.com

"Trash"  by Super Deluxe is primo.  From first looking at these guys you wouldn't think they could pull it off. But contrary kiddies.  Braden Blake and the boys hit the nail on the head covering this song. You can read more about these hotties at www.superdeluxemusic.com

R50 takes "Bad Girl" by the hair and tosses it square to the floor.  This band also did a song on my previously reviewed Enuff Z Nuff Tribute CD. So go check that out kiddies.  I am still waiting to get a new R50 CD to review cuz yep, I dig em.  You can check them out online at www.r50rocks.com

The New Romantics croon "Subway Train" for you.  Excellent choice for this incredible tune.  The vocals stand out so predominantly here that words cant come close to illustrating this and giving it any sort of imaginable image.  By the looks of these guys you wouldn't know what to expect.  All can tell you is be prepared for a surprise.  This is Rad!  (Oh that's so 70's...)  Read more about them at  www.thenewromantics.net

Johnny Jetson and The Tattooed Millionaires cover "Private World". Tattooed Millionaires is quite possibly one of my favorites in LA and if you fuckers have the chance to go see them live DO IT!  Cuz I would say your a total idiot of you don't.  The do Rock and Roll right.  They attack this song with a certain dynamism you just don't hear that often.  You can find out more about Johnny and the boys at www.tattooedmillionaires.com

Puss N' Boots" is perfected by Napoleon Blownaparts.  Just some of the greatest Glam to hit your CD player since New York Dolls and Hanoi Rocks.  Of course this incredible sound is melting your ears from none other than California.  So many influential sounds mingled together to make rock and roll history with this track.  Check out this band at www.blownaparts.com

"Chatterbox' makes you quake when it is screaming out of your speakers by Coyote Shivers. This multi-talented guy is not only singing his way into your world, you will find his vocal talents in sound tracks from movies like "Empire Records" , Coyote did a cameo in "Johnny Neumonic" and now he is also staring in a movie entitled "Girl in 3D".  His maniacal style and unique sound come together to make "Chatterbox" a track that is well worth a playback time and time again.  Read more about Coyote at www.coyoteshivers.com

Science Fiction Idols Blast out "Human Being".  Sounding loud and proud from the east coast comes a band that can influences like New York Dolls and wrap them up with up with 80's real rock and create the sound that comes at you fast and furious.  Here is combination of enthusiastic harmonies and independent instruments that scratch ya and leave a mark.  Forever in your memory and available on the web at www.sciencefictionidols.com

"Who Are The Mystery Girls" is force fed to your rock and roll appetite by Starduster.  The thing that stands out the most about this song is the incredible vocals and impressive backgrounds.  What a way to play it. Brian, Ted and Ricky are a perfect combination to cover this song vocally.  Brian is also the lead singer of the band Barely Pink which was also covered in the Enuff Z Nuff Tribute CD Review.  Give em a listen at www.starduster.net

My Favorite song on the CD is "Lonely Planet Boy" by Crash Kelly.  What a perfect combination, this song and this band.  I think my CD player has burned a hole in the CD.  I cant think of a better band to cover this song,  Okay yea I am a Glam Junkie and probably the wrong person to review this CD but let me just say... If you don't pick this up your a flippin moron.  If nothing else than to hear this track.  www.crashkelly.ca

Killingbird is up next with "Frankenstein".  This is so intense. Get your eyeliner and leather jacket and get ready to rock that ass freaks.  Straight atcha from Los Angeles is the gritty voice of uber-aggressive Glam Rock intermingled with the edgy emotion of punk.  Christian takes a stab at covering this fabulous Dolls song and this bands rendition is as close to perfection as you can get.  Grab up some Killingbird shit at www.killingbird.net

The Alarm does "Jetboy". English and over the top these guys do a live version of "Jetboy' There is something to be said when a band can cover and record a song like this in a small venue in front of an ecstatic crowd and make it sound so good you think you are sitting right there with them   Mike Peters has been around since the 80's.  He has seen music come and go, change, morph and fizzle and can still stand up there and rock you like its his first live show.  Check out more about Mike and The Alarm at www.thealarm.com

And as a bonus track on here is the 17th and final cut called "You Cant Put Your Arms Around a Memory" performed by American Anthem.  Hailing from Hollywood comes a couple of brothers with an arsenal of accomplishments under their belts.  From working with Bret Michaels to touring all over the world.  They have been featured on other Tribute CD's and have been saved here for the last and final cut of Jetboys of Babylon.  Last but certainly not least is a phenomenal cover of this tune.  You can find out more about their up and coming show and releases at www.american-anthem.com

My suggestion to all you New York Dolls fans, or hell to all you kiddies who might just dig a band or two featured on here, go back to the Sugarbuzz main page and click on the link for CD Smash and buy this album.  Its long, Its hard and it is a good ride no matter what position you are in.
